How LP WeatherLogic and ZIP panels are built
Huber ZIP panels are OSB with a phenolic resin–impregnated facer bonded to the panel during manufacturing. The resin layer is the WRB. LP WeatherLogic uses LP’s SmartSide technology — a paper overlay treated with a water-resistive coating — applied to OSB at the factory. Different chemistry, similar outcome.
Both systems use acrylic seam tape to seal the panel-to-panel joints. ZIP’s tape comes in straight, flashing, and stretch versions, plus a liquid flash option. LP offers acrylic tape in 3¾” and 6″ widths.
Vapor permeability — the spec that matters most
This is the biggest real spec difference. WeatherLogic measures 5.35 perms. ZIP measures 12–16. In a cold climate where the wall needs to dry outward through the winter, more permeability is generally better — moisture that gets into the wall cavity can escape through the WRB instead of being trapped against the back of the sheathing.
5.35 perms is still a vapor-permeable WRB. It’s not a vapor barrier. But on a cold-climate build where the wall design assumes outward drying, builders tend to favor the higher-perm option.
Tape and flashing systems
ZIP’s flashing ecosystem is more developed. ZIP Stretch tape, ZIP Liquid Flash, and the cold-weather ZIP tape formulation give you a manufacturer-matched answer for every flashing detail. LP’s tape system is simpler — two widths of acrylic tape and a recommendation to use compatible flashing for windows and doors. For complex flashing details, having ZIP Liquid Flash in the kit is valuable. On a simple rectangular custom home, both tape systems handle the work.
Warranty and exposure
Both products carry a 180-day exposure guarantee. Both can be left exposed through a typical Mountain West build window. ZIP’s 30-year limited warranty is the better-known spec; confirm LP’s current warranty terms with your supplier or LP rep before specifying.
Cost reality
At the supplier counter, WeatherLogic typically prices slightly below ZIP — sometimes by $2-$4 per sheet. Over a 2,400 sq ft home that’s a few hundred dollars in materials, easily eaten by other variables. Net: cost is not the deciding factor between the two for most builds.
Supplier availability — the underrated factor
In eastern Idaho, ZIP is the more commonly stocked product. Some yards carry both. Some only carry one. If you’re trying to keep a build on schedule and your local supplier stocks WeatherLogic but has to special-order ZIP, that’s a real reason to spec WeatherLogic. The “best” sheathing system that arrives three weeks late is not the best.
Which one we’d spec, and why
On most Teton Valley custom homes where supplier availability is equal, we’d lean ZIP — the higher perm rating, the more developed flashing system, and the longer track record win for us. On a build where the lumberyard stocks LP and we trust the crew on it, WeatherLogic is a perfectly capable substitute. We wouldn’t switch systems mid-job just to chase the brand.
