Window U-factor is where mountain modern designs run into the code most often. The 2018 IECC prescriptive path for Zone 6 caps fenestration at U-0.30, with 25% maximum glazing-to-floor-area ratio unless a performance-path energy model demonstrates equivalent performance. Large glazed walls facing the Tetons often exceed 25%, which means the project moves onto the performance path — REScheck or a full energy model — and the offsets have to come from somewhere (thicker cavity insulation, better windows, an HRV, tighter blower door target). Stock plans have a place. They are cheaper up front — $800–$2,500 for a downloaded set, against a fixed design fee quoted per project for custom plans — and if the plan happens to fit the lot, program, and jurisdiction, they can be a reasonable starting point.
